This wide-ranging business with marketing programme provides a solid grounding in all areas of business and management, coupled with specialist marketing content including digital marketing, consumer behaviour, communications and marketing planning. This degree includes an integrated foundation year for you if you do not have the appropriate qualification or experience for direct entry to year 1 of the degree.

The foundation year helps you develop knowledge and skills to make the transition to university study, and in particular, to gain business and management knowledge and develop academic and personal skills to proceed confidently through the remainder of the course. During the foundation year (year 0) you study a range of fundamental business and management subjects, and develop important practical academic skills to prepare you for the remainder of your course. This programme ensures you enter the competitive graduate marketplace with the knowledge, skills and experience to stand out from the crowd.

Year 0, the foundation year, allows you to develop key discipline knowledge in business and management, and develops your confidence and creative thinking skills, as well as financial competence and numeracy skills. The content of the remaining years of the course is identical to the content of the BA (Hons) Business with Marketing degree.

Year 1 is mainly tutor led and focuses on providing you with the necessary underpinning in terms of broad business knowledge and skills. You explore key business and management concepts and are introduced to your specialist area of marketing.

Year 2 takes a more student-led approach with an emphasis on exploring your own interests and deepening your insights as well as having more responsibility for your own learning. During this year you develop a broader international perspective to the study of business. As well as studying four core business modules, including a module where you gain practical work experience via a self-identified project, you also study two modules in the area of marketing.

The final year explores more advanced topics within business and management and you develop your awareness of your own responsibility as a future leader of business. You consider the strategic and applied aspects of marketing and have the opportunity to put your knowledge into action by undertaking a self-managed independent project via the Dissertation module.

This module introduces you to the role and importance of concepts such as creativity, research and development, design, innovation and entrepreneurial activity, and encourages you to be able to account for and to adopt some of the basic principles in a marketing context whilst simultaneously appreciating the commercial / environmental realities that encourage and constrain effective implementation.

Understanding Organisations

You study some of the general principles of business management, particularly in the context of structure, culture, leadership, organisational behaviour, the business environment and the impact of these areas operationally. You are also introduced to the concept of strategic management with an emphasis on organisational resource and competency. And you consider the impact of organisational behaviour on overall business effectiveness, examining the role of the individual within the organisation and exploring motivation, perception and personal impact.

 

Year 2 core modules

Agile Management

Enterprise and Practice

This applied module allows you to demonstrate your practical skills and knowledge within a work environment. You explore the theoretical and practical world of business and will explore entrepreneurial and wider managerial approaches to the development of business within enterprise. Through your work within an enterprise, you will develop valuable professional skills and first-hand knowledge of an enterprise. If you already work you will be guided to recognise and reflect on this practice and use your own organisation as a case study. You are supported by academic staff and business contacts from across and outside the University.

International Business and Management

You develop an understanding of the main issues affecting international business in the global economy and explore topics including globalisation, trade, economic growth and development. You focus specifically on examining these topics across different cultures. As the module progresses you become able to differentiate cultural variations and the impact of cultural difference on individuals and key organisations. You also have the opportunity to study a culture of your choice in-depth.

Marketing Communications

The module ensures that you understand the potential linkages between key marketing communication options and formats, including online and offline advertising, sales promotion and public relations. Building on previous concepts in marketing, such as targeting, segmentation and positioning, you will be encouraged to think about the problems faced by brand managers involved in the marketing communication industry. You will learn to apply marketing communication models and creative concepts to develop an integrated marketing communications campaign.

Principles and Practice of Marketing

This module extends your existing marketing knowledge and comprehension of marketing management and strategy. It is argued that successful marketing managers must have a sound understanding of the strategic choices available to them if they are to meet the demands of a rapidly changing operating environment.

This module examines the degree of organisational change required for an organisation to become market driven in the face of opportunities and threats presented by external forces. Consumer behaviour and the selection of markets are also considered before placing the focus on managing the marketing mix.

You will be introduced to a range of important strategic planning concepts and will consider a range of marketing strategies available to managers; this consideration will include a critical assessment of their suitability across a range of organisations and situations. You also consider the components of the marketing plan. Case studies, videos and hypothetical scenarios will be utilised to allow you to apply academic underpinning to practical situations.

Research Methods

Building on prior learning within various stage 1 modules, this module develops your understanding and awareness of the principles and practicalities underpinning ethical and rigorous research. Through interactive seminar sessions with research-active academic staff, the module develops the practical skills you require for conducting a rigorous and ethical research study. The skills developed and knowledge gained will link to the stage 3 Dissertation module.

 

Final-year core modules

Contemporary Issues in Business Management

You develop an understanding of the challenges faced by organisations and explores the controversies and dilemmas of contemporary management thinking and practice. You study three key interrelated contemporary issues facing businesses - internationalisation; technological innovation and sustainability.

Dissertation

Your final year dissertation is an opportunity to do an independent piece of research, demonstrating that you know how to take a systematic approach to research, analysis and evaluation within a structured business-orientated framework. It also encourages you to reflect and critically evaluate your personal development.

Marketing Planning Application

This module explores the role of marketing in the modern organisation. It considers a review of important concepts and techniques that managers need in order to analyse today’s markets and to capitalise on the opportunities that are continually emerging.

Sales Management

This module introduces you to the issues, strategies and relationships that relate to the job of managing an effective sales force. It focuses on the consultative approach of understanding the buyer needs by helping them overcome their problems, challenges, and creating value. You will gain insights into the new buyer thought processes, the new sales personae required for dealing with the new buyers, and how to establish and implement a dynamic sales process

Strategic Management and Responsible Leadership

You are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively lead change in business and enterprise. You will consider macro environment and contemporary issues, specifically relating to leading change, leading and implementing strategy and leading commercial development. You identify personal leadership qualities and skills and improvement strategies which will promote change and organisational development.

How you learn

Modules are taught by lectures, seminars, practical workshops, work-based activities and group work. Teaching staff adopt a range of web-based technologies to deliver module content, assess, provide feedback and communicate with students.

The programme is assessed via a variety of methods including assignments, examinations, group work, presentations and live practical projects.

Work placement year

Between Year 2 and your final year, you have the opportunity to spend a year in industry on placement, or study abroad at one of our partner institutions. Alternatively you could proceed on to the final year.

Entry requirements

A typical offer is 32-64 tariff points from at least two A levels (or equivalent) and GCSE grade A-C (or equivalent) in English and maths.

We welcome applications from mature students without conventional entry requirements. We will take into account any alternative qualifications or other experience you may have.
