Are you passionate about computer animation and looking for a course that will give you the creative and technical skills to get you ready for working in the industry?

You gain professional skills in all aspects of 2D and 3D Animation including drawing for animation, modeling, animation, texturing and rendering. This is supported with an understanding of the animation production process and experience of working in a team. On successful completion of the course you can progress onto the third year of our Computer Character Animation degree courses.

With the option of full or part time study, this course provides you with an excellent foundation in the field of computer animation. Guest speakers from industry regularly give talks and you have the option to attend the Animex International Festival of Animation and Computer Games, hosted annually by the School of Computing.

What you study

In year one you learn the principles of 2D and 3D computer animation and develop practical skills in modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering using industry standard equipment. You become proficient in the creation of the key components of the animation pre-production process, and develop essential skills in drawing for animation. This is supported with a module on animation industry skills where you gain an insight into how the industry works and develop key skills for gaining employment.

In year two you further develop your practical and creative skills in 2D and 3D character animation. This includes applying acting for animation principles to create strong performances in your 3D work. You have a thorough understanding of the animation production process and develop essential team working skills through the production of a short film. Advanced technical skills in modelling and rigging are also developed.

How you learn

Lectures provide you with specific theoretical information related to the subject, while accompanying tutorials focus on developing practical skills and work on assessments. Tutorial sessions are also used for feedback and advice from tutors. Further support is offered online in the form of extra learning material where necessary. You have the opportunity to attend keynote lectures and portfolio reviews from industry professionals and recruiters.

How you are assessed

We believe that it is essential for you to learn through the experience of doing. Assessment for the majority of modules is in the form of practical projects, which you work on throughout the academic year. You develop a portfolio of design, animation and modeling work. In year two you work collaboratively with other students on a group film.
