2012 entry

Mix art, science and technology and you get the creative digital media we demand in our everyday communication, social and education activities. Media industries have to encompass an ever-growing blend of digital technologies and platforms so that television and cinema can interact with the web, computer games and mobile technologies.

Media industries need graduates with multidisciplinary skills, even if they specialise in a particular area. The flexibility of this course gives you the skills and knowledge to work in the ever-growing and dynamic industry of digital media.

You can tailor your own degree by choosing from a broad portfolio of creative and technical modules.

How you learn

To support you in your learning we have a dedicated team of highly qualified and experienced tutors who have worked in the industry. Some of our tutors continue to work on enterprise projects part time and feed back what they have learned into the curriculum. This enables you to work on live project briefs and to build up a portfolio of work founded on cutting edge technology that meets industry needs.

Our virtual learning environment (VLE) brings together all your modules on the course in one handy place, giving you online access to comprehensive course materials and background reading. You will also be able to access feedback on your work and use the lively discussion forums to discuss tasks with fellow students on your modules. Course announcements and assessments are all accessible online, enabling you to keep up to date on what’s happening.

How you are assessed

One of the key features of this industry is the need for job applications to be supported with a portfolio of credible and relevant work. Our learning and teaching approach and assessment strategy acknowledges this need, and throughout the course students are challenged with case studies that are directly related to the topical needs of the job market. A range of different assessment types are utilised, but the problems you solve, the tools you will use, and the methods employed are the ones you will use in the work place.

Professional placement

A significant step towards employment is work experience. This course is available in sandwich mode where students have an option to undertake a year’s supervised work placement between second and final years.

The University also has a thriving graduate internship programme in which digital media graduates are encouraged to undertake 3- to 12-month salaried projects.

Career opportunities

This course will lead to a wide range of opportunities. Depending on the options you choose, you will be suited to a career in film and TV, multimedia, animation, web and games industries, animation, advertising or visualisation.

Entry requirements

A typical offer is 280 tariff points including at least two A levels (or equivalent). You are normally invited for an interview.
