2012 entry

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are part of our everyday life, at home and work. Working with ICT involves finding technological solutions to everyday communication needs – if you have a logical mind and enjoy problem solving then the ICT sector could be the place for you to excel.

ICT specialists deliver real-world solutions to everyday problems and help build the reputation of any organisation they work in.

ICT brings together the themes of rapid systems development and systems design. Rapid development explores the development of computer systems using packages – without programming. Systems design concentrates on systems analysis and design and the interaction between ICT and people.

If you want to work on the people side of computing and develop packages rather than programming then this is the course for you.

How you learn

You are taught by a combination of lectures and practical sessions per module. Lectures concentrate on teaching the principles while practical sessions allow you to put these principles into practice.

How you are assessed

Assessment is a mixture of examinations and in-course assessments, using case studies and technical exercises.

Professional placement

You may apply to take a year-long supervised work placement between your second and final years. Placements provide an opportunity for you to improve your employment prospects by developing new skills and deepening your understanding of the subject.

The placement year is assessed and contributes to your final degree award. Students are selected by employers through interview and are normally paid by the host organisation during the placement.

Career opportunities

The combination of academic study and intensive practical work will prepare you for a variety of specialist roles in user support, systems analysis and systems development. Selected option paths could also lead to careers in network support or web design.
