The course is for International students who are qualified nurses wanting to continue their professional development and attain a degree in nursing. However, this award does not lead to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council for England and Wales.
What you study
The course is responsive to the WHO agenda of developing nurses who can be effective contributors to global health delivery and health preventative measures. The key focuses therefore is on evidence-based practice, research skills, personal effectiveness, the development of clinical reasoning, patterns of health and disease from a global perspective, exploration of health belief systems and the cultural influences on the development of these beliefs, and the enhancement of specialist knowledge. This enables you to determine the best application of evidence to practice.
You develop further your decision-making and leadership skills and personal effectiveness. These skills will enable you to contribute effectively to the changing global health agenda.You have the opportunity to examine some key foundations underpinning health and explore theories which underpin the advancement of practice, you also develop key skills for successful progression through the course and to aid the development of an autonomous approach to learning.
How you learn
You develop skills to use evidence appropriately to inform clinical decision making. You develop a life-long ability to understand how evidence is generated, retrieved, critically appraised and employed in practice. Such a focus ensures you are equipped with the necessary foundations to engage with the research agenda and develop further an evidence-based approach to practice throughout your career.
The course provides flexible learning opportunities and is designed to develop your critical thinking, analytical skills as well as the skills of critical reflection and application of evidenced-based practice. These skills enable you to enhance your professional practice.
A range of strategies help your learning and development including key lectures, seminars, structured resource-based learning materials, computer-based workshops, student presentations, diagnostic effectiveness/leadership tools, individual and group tutorials, and skills laboratory workshops. Shared learning opportunities in a number of modules enhance your experience and allow for cross-cultural discussions and enrichment of all students learning.
How you are assessed
Assessment plays a significant role in your learning experience so a variety of assessment strategies are used throughout the programme to provide you with a diversity of experience, to challenge and also extend you. Assessments may be reflective essays, individual and group presentations, exams, MCQs and OSCE.
Career opportunities
The course is designed to enhance and expand international nurses’ core knowledge of nursing. Skills gained on the course will enable you to enhance your professional practice and to make an equal contribution to patient care and the development and management of the clinical setting. Engagement in research based activities and discussing and presenting research findings provide vital transferable skills, useful for subsequent careers and enhancing employability.
On completion of the course you may be eligible to continue your studies on a master’s degree.
Entry requirements
You must be an appropriately registered nurse in your country of origin, with a diploma qualification or its equivalent acceptable to the University and normally have a minimum of one year of post-registration experience. English language is also a requirement equivalent to the University standard requirement for an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or equivalent
Candidates who hold an Associate degree may be eligible for entry into year two of the programme. All candidates’ applications will be dealt with on an individual basis to elicit if this possible.
