Interested in what’s going on in the world? Why some things make the news and others don’t? Who controls the media and who regulates it? Then this course is for you. Media is a near constant presence in our lives. If you want to understand it better, this course will give you the necessary practical and critical skills.
By building your media literacy, you not only gain a greater understanding of the world, but also develop important intellectual and transferable skills which employers really value.
On this course, you gain experience of both traditional and new media formats in one of the country's best learning and teaching environments, and graduate confident, skilled and savvy, able to think clearly for yourself.
What you study
Year 1 introduces you to key practices, theories, concepts and histories associated with producing and analysing media texts. Year 2 develops your production, analytical and conceptual skills within more specialised modules. Year 3 is about consolidating knowledge and skills, and working more independently.

How you learn
A wide range of learning experiences blends practice with in-depth subject knowledge. Theory modules are usually delivered by a combination of lectures, seminars and independent study. Practical modules are delivered through extended workshop and laboratory sessions.
How you are assessed
You are assessed on a wide range of assignments including written submissions and portfolios, presentations and production work. There are no formal examinations on the course.
Professional placement
You are encouraged to undertake a range of work experience. Our close relationship with local and national media companies will provide a variety of opportunities for you to pursue. In the third year you undertake a 'live' communication or media brief for a client organisation.
Career opportunities
Media graduates are sought after by employers across a range of industries owing to their highly developed skills in the areas of communication, team working and problem solving. This course prepares you for careers in research, production, publishing, public relations and marketing. It is also an ideal grounding for those considering a career in teaching or training.
Entry requirements
A typical offer is 240-280 tariff points (2011) or 280 tariff points (2012) from at least two A levels (or equivalent).
