Performing Arts at Teesside has a growing reputation within education and within the industry itself. Our Performing Arts team is made up both of professional practitioners and researchers with international profiles, with close and current links to the industry. Our Music research team has received national recognition as a member of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Music and Inclusivity (one of only two CETLs in music nationally).
The level of vocational skills and the impressive employment record of graduates from Performing Arts and Music contributed to national recognition of the high quality of our course provision by the Quality Assurance Agency which awarded us an “Excellent” teaching quality score. Their review also highlighted our well-planned learning resources, particularly IT provision.
You benefit from the fact that most academic staff are creative practitioners, offering professional experience as well as high standards of tuition and guidance. Staff are also involved in research which informs teaching and ensures you are kept abreast of current practice.
Each discipline area enables you to explore and innovate in the context of professional awareness. There are opportunities to undertake live projects with a range of clients and agencies to gain experience of real business situations and make a significant addition to your portfolio. Our students produce public events and performances as self-authored research projects and for client-sponsored events.
Applicants for Performing Arts and Music courses are normally invited for an interview/audition which enables you to see our outstanding facilities, meet the staff and students, and view current work. It also provides us with an opportunity to discuss your experience and help you decide on the best degree route for you.
Offers of places are normally made following the interview and we strongly encourage you to attend. If you are unable to attend, we can organise a virtual interview: you send your work to us, online or on CD or DVD, and we discuss it over the telephone, via email or Skype.
Our Performing Arts and Music students have access to a whole range of specialist facilities including digital editing facilities, recording studios, rehearsal spaces, dance studios, TV studios with green screen facilities and a purpose-built theatre.
Teesside University has state-of-the-art music facilities including digital music laboratories, recording studios including a professional level 7.1 surround sound recording studio based on a Digidesign Icon D-Console desk and a world-class sound stage.
Our Performing Arts and Music degrees are designed especially for those wanting to work in this ever-expanding industry. Alongside leading roles in acting, dance or music production, the courses also prepare students for many other careers including teacher, animateur, choreographer, director and presenter. All our courses cover both live and recorded media to help future-proof your career and maximise your employability.
Digital technology is at the forefront of nearly every media projection including film, television, new media, animations and computer games. We nurture your talent by giving you the knowledge, skills and experience you need to succeed within the industry whether your area of interest is in performing, composing, producing, facilitating, teaching or filling any number of roles in the world of the arts, music and entertainment.
