Do you have a passion for dance? Want to work in the dance world? Want to develop your own choreographies? Our BA (Hons) Dance degree is just what you are looking for. If you are passionate and driven, we will help you build and sustain a career as a performer, choreographer, teacher, facilitator, dance development officer or dance administrator.
You study a range of dance styles, learn how to choreograph and teach, and develop knowledge and understanding of the world of dance practitioners and how to manage yourself as a dance artist. Through performance and projects with other disciplines, you develop your individuality, creativity, versatility and communication skills.
Wayne Sleep Scholarship
UK and EU applicants who apply or have already applied to study on the BA (Hons) Dance will automatically be considered for the Wayne Sleep Scholarship. We will use the information you supply on your application, and in particular your personal statement, to decide who will receive the Scholarship.
In some cases you may be invited for interview for the course and this will be used with your personal statement to determine eligibility. We are looking for students to demonstrate:
- artistic excellence
- enthusiasm for dance as art
- determination to work as a dance artist
- potential for development.
The Wayne Sleep Scholarship will only be awarded to a student who gives a firm acceptance to our offer of a place.
What you study
A practical study of dance is coupled with knowledge of different traditions and uses of dance, and an understanding of dance's place in society.
Furthermore you learn how to use different media in the creating and recording of dance, to edit sound and video, and use technology in creative processes. You have access to state-of-the-art editing facilities and an industry-standard fully equipped theatre.
How you learn
You undertake both practical and theoretical studies, including dance classes and workshops, other practical sessions, lectures, seminars and presentations, and performances. These are in a number of different learning environments and also in the wider community. There is a work placement later in the course.
How you are assessed
Your practical and theoretical knowledge are assessed through performances, presentations, leading workshops and classes, and contextual and reflective writing around your practice.
Career opportunities
Graduates will be able to work in the first instance in a number of different contexts within the dance industry. Crucial to the employability of graduates is the rooting of the programme in the community and educational arenas. This gives a wide range of transferable skills, which can be applied not only within the dance world but also in other educational and community careers. Graduates will also be equipped to continue into further study, either vocational or academic.
Entry requirements
You need to audition for this course, as well as having formal academic qualifications or professional experience. We welcome your application if you're a mature student without traditional qualifications but with relevant experience or abilities.
As this course includes work with young people and community groups, you also need a clear enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure.
