Encouraging people to lead a healthy lifestyle is now a major focus in government policy and physical education teaching.
Practitioners with an in-depth knowledge of applied exercise science are increasingly in demand from people seeking expert advice on how to begin or maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
You learn to help people adopt physical activity, and also learn about the potential barriers to sport and exercise, preparing you perfectly for a career in health, fitness, personal training or exercise referral.
How you learn
This multidisciplinary course utilises different teaching and learning strategies to ensure you graduate not only with excellent theoretical knowledge but also essential work-related skills. The teaching methods utilised vary between modules depending on what is being taught but they include lectures, seminars, laboratory work, workshops, practicals, tutorials and a work placement.
How you are assessed
You are assessed by a wide variety of methods including group work, presentations, laboratory reports and examinations. Many of the assessments mirror work-related tasks and thus help you prepare for employment within industry. You are also assessed on your practical skills as an exercise instructor.
Professional placements
There is a compulsory professional placement in the Year 3 module Health Physiology.
Career opportunities
You'll have the skills to develop and implement physical activity interventions for individuals and could consider a career in the health-related fitness area or teaching in mainstream education or health promotion fields.
Entry requirements
A typical offer is 260 tariff points from at least two A levels (or equivalent). You must have five GCSEs including English, maths and a science at grade C (or equivalent). We recommend an Access course if you're a mature student.
To enter the second year you need an HND in Sport Science/Exercise with a merit profile in appropriate modules.
