Will the legacy of London 2012 be positive for sport in Great Britain? How will the wider population benefit from this country hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games? What will happen to the expensive new stadia when it's all over? And how will sports providers cope with the inevitable surge of interest in a variety of sports?

In addition to considering these kinds of questions, this course explores the sociological, managerial and psychological elements of sport as well as marketing, policy development and public relations.

You also unravel the complex issues of funding from grassroots to elite level and consider whether elite sport and children’s health are of comparable value.

The sports development experience of your tutors, in practice and research, ensures your understanding of policies and processes in the industry are up to date and relevant to a career in this field.

How you learn

The course provides you with the opportunity to study a suite of modules designed to provide an insight to the structure, practices and theory involved in the diverse industry of sports development. You study in the areas of sociology, management and psychology as they relate to sports development and other relevant occupations. There is an opportunity in each year to relate your academic theory to actual work-related situations. As you engage fully with the programme you learn through these work-related situations as well as lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and practical sessions. You have full access to the University’s excellent Library.

How you are assessed

A broad range of assessments has been designed to assess your learning in each module and at each level of the programme. These include individual as well as group work in presentations, essays reports, examinations and portfolios.

Career opportunities

Graduates from this programme will be well prepared for careers in sports development with national governing bodies of sport, local authorities or other similar organisations. This course is also a good pre-requisite qualification for a range of postgraduate courses.
