Design, Fashion & Textiles

Our design, fashion and textile degrees combine artistic flair and creativity with teamwork and a business-like, client-focused approach – and our teaching includes all of these strands. Be inspired and expand your talents while we introduce you to essential knowledge, skills and practices. We’re at the cutting edge of teaching and learning, and we have high expectations of you.

An excellent reputation

Design graduate, Dan Walker, designed the Batmobile Tumbler featured in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Graduate Marek Reichman, director of design at Aston Martin Lagonda, has designed James Bond’s Aston Martin DB10 in Spectre.

Quality teaching

The level of vocational skills and the impressive employment record of graduates from art and design contributed to national recognition of the high quality of our course provision by the Quality Assurance Agency which awarded us an excellent teaching quality score. Their review also highlighted our well-planned learning resources, particularly IT provision.

At Teesside University you are taught and inspired by doctors, readers and professors – many are active researchers within the field of design. And you benefit from the fact that a number of academic staff and an impressive list of specialist visiting lecturers are creative practitioners, offering professional experience as well as high standards of tuition and guidance. Staff are also involved in research which informs teaching and ensures our standards are abreast of current practice.

Many students stay on to study a postgraduate qualification to enhance their knowledge and skills further. We are constantly expanding our range of postgraduate courses to meet the needs of industry and employers.

Professional awareness

Each discipline area enables you to explore and innovate in the context of professional awareness. There are opportunities to undertake ‘live’ projects for external clients to gain experience of real business situations and make a significant addition to your portfolio. Our students compete in national competitions and produce public exhibitions as self-authored research projects for client-sponsored events.

Applicants for our design courses are normally invited for an interview which enables you to see our outstanding facilities, meet staff and students, and view current work. It also provides us with an opportunity to discuss your portfolio and help you decide which is the best degree route for you.

Offers of places are normally made at or after the interview and we strongly encourage you to attend. If you are unable to attend, we can organise a virtual interview: you send your work to us, usually on CD, and we discuss it with you over the telephone or by email.

First-class facilities

Teesside University provides you with individual studios from the very start, and access to latest facilities with skilled technicians that can help you create and innovate.

We have a dedicated print room with bookbinding, a media centre that loans cameras and equipment (even video drones), sound-proof recording studios, green-screen production studios, Mac and PC labs, a stellar workshop for wood, 3D printing, metalworking and welding, and access to fashion and textiles studios.

We are also one of the only art programmes in the UK with dark rooms to work with analogue photography - all enhanced by excellent technical support.

Excellent prospects

Our design graduates work all over the world – Milan, New York, Shanghai, Krakow, London, Prague. Paris, Lisbon. And, of course, Middlesbrough.

This field of study offers an exciting range of employment possibilities in the arts, design, entertainment and cultural industries. We enjoy strong local, regional and national links with industry professionals who contribute to teaching and project themes. While mainly vocational, these courses also provide you with useful transferable skills.

Remember, at Teesside University you can study art and design subjects from undergraduate degree right through to PhD level.
