George's social enterprise, The Ministry of Building, Innovation and Education (MOBIE), is kickstarting a fundamental change to the home building industry. In partnership with George, Teesside University has developed a suite of courses in advanced home construction starting with a BSc (Hons) Innovative Home Design and Construction* and a postgraduate degree course – MSc Advanced Home Futures.
These courses take a new look at the home building industry and offer a broad-based practical approach to attract learners from different disciplines, not just traditional architecture. Each enables you to explore a variety of specialisms allowing you to challenge the status quo.
You engage with industry and explore the concept of home, different aspects of living spaces, and digital solutions to address the issues of the built environment.
'As a developing industry the offsite sector requires different skills and knowledge to traditional construction – the designs, processes and analytical models are different to those widely used across the industry. MOBIE has the opportunity to address this challenge and provide highly trained, inspired professionals that the offsite manufacturing industry needs to transition to a sustainable mainstream construction delivery method.'
'To address the housing crisis in this country we need to think differently about how we design, construct and deliver new homes. As a founding supporter of MOBIE we believe that Teesside University’s advanced home construction courses help equip the next generation with the skills major employers are looking for. These courses don’t just focus on how we construct homes but the crucial role that housing plays in all our lives.'
'Timing is everything: the advanced home construction courses perfectly reflect the transformation towards digital technology and offsite construction. These pioneering and innovative courses enable students to develop the collaborative skills essential for success in the digital environment.'
'The UK homebuilding industry doesn't innovate at the level of technology companies or car manufacturers. There isn't the level of research and development needed to create homes fit for 21st-century living. Combine this with the massive industry skills shortage and you realise it’s time for change. George Clarke’s innovative advanced home construction courses are vital in creating the new talent that Urban Splash needs to recruit and help revolutionise the way we design, build and manufacture homes in Britain. Well done George Clarke.'
