Demystifying Maths & Statistics for Bioscientists
- Duration: 5 days
- Price: £300 (students), £1100 (industrial participants)
- Dates: TBC
This 5-day course aims to teach the essential mathematical principles and statistical theories that will equip research students and industrial practitioners with the tools to make an instant impact in their respective fields.
Delivered in partnership with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Newcastle University, this course will build on the foundations delegates gained at an undergraduate level and demonstrate the real-world applications of maths and statistics both in research and industry. Scientific and industrial context-based material will allow delegates to appreciate data sources and the reasoning behind the specific mathematical and statistical approaches used.
Case studies and practical examples will reinforce the knowledge acquired and deepen the understanding of various methods and their industrial and/or scientific relevance.
Topics covered:
- Industrial and scientific demands
- Data characteristics
- Data analysis (exploratory, multivariate, spectral)
- Design of experiments
- Statistical process control
- Advanced analytical methods and big data
- Synthetic biology considerations
- Future sector challenges
Who should attend:
- All bioscientists with some familiarity of at least A-level mathematics and individuals working in research or industry (engineers, operators, process development scientists, managers) looking to increase their knowledge of maths and statistical methods.
