Introduction to analytical techniques for bioprocessing

Duration: 3 days
Price: £2,250+VAT

Our introductory courses are aimed at scientists, operatives and managers who are at an early stage in their career, and who want to gain a broad understanding of the techniques used in biomanufacturing. Delegates are introduced to industry standard procedures, their underlying principles and how these procedures are applied within the fields of biological and advanced therapy manufacturing.

The creation of this course has been funded by IUK through the ATSTN.

Delivered in partnership with industry leaders this three-day course introduces the analytical methodologies and technologies used for the characterisation and qualification of biological therapeutic products, including antibodies and viral vectors. Lecture topics include an introduction to biological therapeutics and advanced therapies, protein form and function, critical quality attributes, approaches for the use of orthogonal methods, an introduction to the principles of design of experiments plus method-specific lectures by industry experts. Our unique training facility houses state-of-the-art equipment for hands-on practical sessions where delegates will experience the analytical methods used for the assessment of product purity and process impurities including protein gel electrophoresis, ELISA, PCR primer design, cell counting and flow cytometry.

Learning outcomes:

  • Appreciate the challenges of biotherapeutic manufacturing in assessing product purity, efficacy, and safety
  • Develop and apply an understanding of common analytical techniques including electrophoresis, ELISA, PCR and cell counting.
  • Gain an understanding of more complex analytical techniques such as flow cytometry, surface plasmon resonance and mass spectrometry.
  • Apply selection criteria for the selection of routine and orthogonal analytical techniques for the assessment of biopharmaceuticals and advanced therapy products.

Who should attend:

  • Early career biotechnology professionals (analytical development scientists, process development scientists, QC analysts, regulatory affair managers, project managers and quality assurance managers) with existing preliminary knowledge of; basics of upstream and downstream technologies, entry level protein biochemistry, and general laboratory techniques (including buffer preparation and liquid handling).
  • Individuals would typically be qualified with a relevant further education qualification such as a diploma or BSc in Science. Attendees without the recommended background or qualifications will be offered additional ‘access to the course’ support.
