Course overview

This course provides you with an understanding of both financial and management accounting. You learn to appreciate the impact and decisions on cost base and the profitability of a business.

Indicative content
Business as a transformation system – use of money to record activity
Profit and loss accounts
Balance sheets – relation to personal finance and company issues
Cash flow
Debtor and creditor management
Types of costs – fixed and variable – importance for decision making
Control loop – importance and preparation of Budgets, variance reports, decision making
Personal application - Preparation and review of personal reflection and action plan

How you are assessed

Formative feedback will be given through class-based case studies, discussion groups and other practical activities.

Summative assessment consists of a 1500 word assignment (100%) requiring students to produce a practical project that could be implemented to increase revenues, reduce costs, reduce waste or generate real business improvement. This will include a 300 word piece of self reflection on the learning gained from undertaking the module.
