Is your company producing a lot of data? Are you using data in the most effective way to make smart decisions and power up productivity? If you are looking for an easy tool to develop business intelligence solutions, then Power BI is the tool for you.

Power BI can be used to reduce the added cost, complexity and security risks of multiple solutions with an analytic platform that scales from individuals, to the organisation as a whole. By learning how to use smart tools, Power BI helps you finding and sharing meaningful insights with hundreds of data visualisation and built-in AI capabilities.

You need access to a PC or laptop, internet, audio headset and Power Bi software.Due to COVID 19 we are going to deliver this course online using Webinar, however support will be available both online and via blackboard.Guidance notes for Applicants

Course details

What you study

Develop your ability to design and implement business intelligence solutions to support an organisations information needs using Power BI.

Ensure you can identify practical development issues when supporting a traditional business intelligence system in order to deliver business value.

Examine how data can be integrated, analysed and reported in order to provide predictive views of business operations using Power BI.

Learn how to select the most effective tools and techniques to support data analytics and build data visualisation tools (dashboards) to deliver effectively business intelligence solutions in Power BI.

How you learn

Teaching reinforces the covered material through discussions, exercises and walk-throughs of case studies. Practical sessions give you hands-on experience of building solutions to support data warehousing business intelligence support for organisations. Resources are available on the virtual learning environment every week.

You are given feedback on your progress in lab sessions. Outside of class time you are directed to various sources to become familiar with the module content.

A variety of open source software is used, including AdventureWorks (SQL format), SQL Server, SQL management Studio and R.

This course is delivered online by webinar and using blackboard which is ideal for forums or contacts to others on this programme.

How you are assessed

You are assessed by 100% in-course assessment on a pass/fail basis – the assessment has two elements:

Intermediate presentation (30%) – you are required to give a short presentation outlining the main steps of the development of your business intelligence solution in Power BI. This includes the data integration and a preliminary data analytics implementation of your business intelligence solution for a chosen dataset. This assesses your ability to demonstrate data integration and analysis skills required to support business intelligence solutions using Power BI.

Report (70%) – this is a document used to present the completed data analytics and report phases of the Power BI solution. You have to report the implementation and design of a business intelligence solution for a chosen dataset. This assesses your ability to demonstrate data analytics, visualisation and reporting skills required to support any business intelligence solution.

Ongoing review meetings provide the opportunity for formative feedback as you develop your solutions to support business intelligence.
