Course overview

This course introduces you to some of the animation methods, materials and techniques used in stop-motion animation. You are guided through a series of exercises which explore an introductory range of stop-frame techniques for creatingstop-motion animation.

What you study

Indicative content

  • Materials and tools used for stop-motion models and animation

  • Introduction to Stop-motion animation techniques, such as claymation, object animation, puppet animation, cut-outs, pixilation and experimenting

  • Straight-ahead animation versus substitution method for stop-motion

  • Applying the fundamental animation principles to stop-motion

  • Animating on a physical set or in a live environment


  • How you are assessed

    100% in course assessment on a pass/fail basis

    Students will be required to submit a portfolio of development work demonstrating a range of skills in Stop-Motion animation. The work will be completed throughout the module during studio sessions with additional work being completed outside of class item
