Further information

Note: this course will run in June 2019.

This course is full-time and runs 9.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

There are 140 contact hours divided into class input, supervised lesson planning, observed teaching practice and feedback and one-to-one tutorial support.

CELTA is a highly respected and recognised qualification across the world. It is accredited by OFQUAL (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Cambridge English Language Assessment The CELTA focuses on five main areas:

  • learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • language analysis and awareness
  • language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • planning and resources for different contexts
  • developing teaching skills and professionalism.

How you learn

Part of the course requires you to complete teaching practice. You teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. You are assessed on your overall performance at the end of the six hours. The teaching practice classes are in smaller groups with a maximum of six trainees per class.
You also observe other English language teachers, who teach on English language courses at the University.

How you are assessed

You are assessed in two ways throughout your course – teaching practice and four written assignments.

You complete four written assignments that focus on:
- analysing and responding to learner needs
- analysing language for teaching purposes
- teaching language skills
- reflecting on classroom teaching.
You are also required to complete a portfolio for assessment consisting of lesson plans, tutor feedback, self-evaluations and records of progress.

An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English Language Assessment, moderates each course. To get the CELTA certificate, you need to pass both assessments. There are three passing grades: Pass A, Pass B and Pass.

Career opportunities

CELTA is accepted by organisations which employ English language teachers throughout the world and career opportunities include:
language schools
universities
publishers
examination boards
non-governmental organisations
the voluntary sector

Entry requirements

You must be 18 years of age or over and have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education (NVQ Level 3). For non-native English speakers, a minimum CEFR
Level C1 English language qualification is required.

For applicants who do not have formal qualifications at the level indicated above, you may still be accepted if you can demonstrate that you would be likely to complete the course successfully.
