Introduction to Creative Writing

Have you ever wanted to write a novel or short story? This course offers individual and group writing activities to broaden your awareness of the approaches, techniques and forms available to writers.

Course overview

This course is for people who are new to creative writing. You explore the possibilities of word play and imaginative writing. You work with words and text in a creative manner and broaden your understanding of how contemporary writers and artists use language within their work.

Winter university

Start date: Starts Wednesday 18 January, Wednesdays for eight weeks, 6.00pm – 9.00pm

This course has now started.

You can study up to 30 credits at Winter University and you can select up to three modules on the same application form. If you would like to add a module later, or change one of your choices, then please email winter.university@tees.ac.uk.

Age restriction
Due to the content and delivery of our Winter University courses, it is advised that applicants are aged 16+ at the time of enrolment. if you are under the age of 16 you must be accompanied at your Winter University classes by a parent or a responsible adult to act in the capacity of a parent (in loco parentis). Your designated adult may need to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Course details

What you study

- bio-mythography: exploring our own stories
- the textual world: writing from the senses
- words: sounds, marks, meanings
- the structures of stories: basic narrative structures.

How you are assessed

You submit a portfolio of creative writing (1,500 - 2,000 words) from the various workshops, along with a 500 word reflective commentary on your creative work and learning.

International applicants must have an IELTS overall score of 5.5 or higher.
