Course overview

The role and responsibilities of a mentor in practice are multi-faceted. This award prepares you for this challenging and immensely rewarding role by developing the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to be a competent mentor. This award is primarily but not exclusively accessed by registered nurses and incorporates the NMC Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (2008). It is open to other health and social care practitioners who want to be mentors and choose to study at degree level. Registered nurses successfully completing this award are able to mentor degree-level student nurses and are theoretically prepared for the sign off mentor role in practice.

What you study

A broad range of material is covered in the module: self-analysis and action planning, principles of work-based learning and teaching, impact of the learning environment, assessment of learning needs, learning theories, managing learning opportunities, assessment methods, managing the failing learner, constructive feedback, sign-off mentor responsibilities, professional accountability, supporting individuals with special needs, inter-professional learning, and systems of monitoring and evaluation.

How you learn

We use a variety of learning and teaching methods to deliver content and you are expected to be proactive in the learning process. Students assume the role of associate mentor while undertaking the module providing the opportunity to apply theory to their practice of supporting the development of a learner. Contact time provides the opportunity for you to explore and discuss mentoring experiences, linking theory to your practice through lectures, seminars, workshops, group work and directed study using pre-prepared worksheets. You are assessed through the production of a reflective portfolio based on your experiences of mentoring a learner in practice. Delivery of award content and submission of the portfolio is within a ten-week time frame.

Entry requirements

You must:

  • be a registered healthcare practitioner with nine months' experience in the speciality
  • be currently in practice with access to learners
  • have evidence of recent level 4 academic study
  • have evidence of attending a mentor workshop in the last three months or alternatively complete one before the end of the Mentoring in Practice module (NHS based staff)
  • have support from an experienced practice mentor for the duration of the module. For applicants working in the NHS, the mentor should be on the trust's mentor database
  • have access to a learner for a minimum of four weeks during the module.
