Course overview

This course takes an innovative approach to learning for all health care professionals in contact with patients and their families at any point in their cancer trajectory, across all services. An integrated approach to learning is intended to critically consider the considerable impact that integrated working has on patient outcomes and experience.

You take part in both theoretical and practical components, mixing face-to-face and online resources. This course fosters a learning environment that supports your learning with an emphasis on safe, high quality care.  The course is delivered over 10 weeks with a series of introductory taught sessions to prepare you for your Professional Practice in Cancer Care attainment. You attend five days of face-to-face seminars and five days of online learning. You are also expected to take part in independent learning including essential reading, assignment preparation and completion.

What you study

You advance your effective professional, critical engagement and complex decision-making skills. The course encompasses competent, trusted, inter-professional care, aligned with understanding of the patients' disease, options, risks, voice, needs, values and preferences. 

How you learn

You identify your own learning needs in relation to your own practice area. This includes performing a SWOT analysis and developing a learning contract informed by the award aims and learning outcomes, following a half-day of induction and clinical supervision with your academic supervisor.  

You attend five days of face-to-face seminars, giving you the opportunity to practice and debate through ethical simulations, case conference and user involvement. You also take part in five days of online learning, and you are expected to engage in independent learning including essential reading, assignment preparation and completion.

This course is supported with e-learning and you are encouraged to use the virtual learning environment (VLE) to access resources, and continue academic discussion outside of the class using discussion boards, facilitated by your academic supervisor.  

How you are assessed

You are assessed through formative feedback and summative assessment.

Formative Assessment: 500 word piece of written work. 
Your submission summarises the enquiry-based learning chosen for the summative assignment

Summative Assessment: 3000 word assignment (100%).
Your summative assessment involves enquiry-based learning that critically analyses and evaluates a negotiated area of cancer practice, identified with your tutor. You submit the assessment in week 51 and unratified results are available four weeks later.
