You explore design thinking and the design process. You follow the process from interpreting the brief to realising innovative outcomes relating to new products and consumer needs. You learn how design can be used to deliver solutions to real-world problems.

You can study up to 30 credits at Summer University and you can select up to three modules on the same application form. If you would like to add a module later, or change one of your choices, then please email summer.university@tees.ac.uk.

Age restriction
Due to the content and delivery of our Summer University courses, it is advised that applicants are aged 16+ at the time of enrolment. All applicants under the age of 18 at the time of enrolment must provide a completed parental consent form and those under 16 years of age are required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You can download the parental consent form and send to summer.university@tees.ac.uk after you submit your application.

What you study

- contexts of contemporary product design and creative innovation
- design thinking and design processes
- innovation in product design and the creation of ideas and concepts for product realisation
- project presentations and reflective summary

How you are assessed

You are assessed through a portfolio of product design creative work (100%).

You keep a journal of your sketch work from each session as you complete the allocated project briefs. In the final session you will present the project outcomes to your tutor and fellow students.

Your journal and project is captured on PowerPoint documents and is submitted for final marking at the end of the final session.

Entry requirements

You are required to have access to basic art and design materials such as paper, sketchbooks, pencils, pens, rulers, basic watercolour/gouache paints.

International applicants must have an IELTS overall score of 5.5 or higher.
