Course overview

The course equips you an appreciation of the issues and processes of incident and investigation in computing environments.

You cover topics in access control, symmetric and public key cryptography protocols, digital signatures, authentication protocols, wireless network and security, network forensics, network security attacks, penetration testing, intrusion detection, access control list and firewalls.

You explore the underlying theoretical concepts such as cryptography and cyber security models as well as practical issues of cyber security attacks and countermeasures in system administration.

How you are assessed

You work on a series of scenario-based and skill-based practical tasks. These will be integrated into a single written report of 3,000 - 3,500 words.

A UK undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a related subject, or cyber/information security relevant knowledge and skills acquired through work experience.

Career opportunities

The credits gained from completing this short course could be used towards further study on our MSc Cyber Security (Online) course, or the on-campus equivalent, MSc Cyber Security.

Salaries in cyber security can be substantial. An IT security analyst and admin at entry level can earn from £42,000 to around £55,000. With experience and career progression, you might earn between £60,000 to £78,000 as an IT security manager, and £75,000 to £90,000 as an IT security architect.

As a cryptographer in the data encryption field, salaries range from £50,000 all the way up to £80,000 in London. Regular monitoring and benchmarking is now a key focus for employers, so as a security auditor you could earn up to £60,000.
