Course overview

In this two-day online course you will gain an introduction to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), adversity and trauma.

You will investigate the diverse impact of ACEs including the cumulative impact of ACEs for negative health outcomes and the impact on child development. You will also learn about the methods employed to prevent ACEs and trauma, the effects of trauma and how trauma affects children in School. The course would benefit anyone who would like to deepen their understanding ACEs but is especially relevant to those individuals who work with children in a professional capacity.

What you study

You will learn about the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), adversity and trauma. You will investigate the diverse impact of ACEs including the cumulative impact of ACEs for negative health outcomes and the impact on child development. You will also learn about the methods employed to prevent ACEs and trauma, the effects of trauma and how trauma affects children in School.

Access to the course will be through our virtual learning environment (VLE). The VLE enables learners to access course materials on their mobile phone, tablet or PC, providing flexibility to fit the course around personal and work commitments.

The course delves deeply into the long-term consequences of adverse childhood experiences and the methods employed to prevent ACEs too and the positive wider social consequences of doing so and the benefits to the individual on a personal level.

This course is unique to Teesside University and has been designed and developed by Lynn Miles, an academic at Teesside University, sufferer of ACEs and eminent lecturer within the field of research in this area.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and cognitive skills
Demonstrate a systematic and critical understanding of the breadth and depth of knowledge in the impact of ACEs, adversity and trauma, interpreting how this relates to current issues.

Analyse critically selected theories by adopting methodological approach in relation to this area of research and its practical application.

Practical and professional skills
Show evidence of knowledge, concepts, theory and practice to promote understanding. Participants will gain insight into the impact of ACEs which will help to further and deepen understanding and add an extra dimension to their abilities in a professional capacity, helping to formulate strategies for policy implementation.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements this course. However, there is an expectation that participants will have some basic knowledge of ACEs, adversity and trauma. A refresh and outline of ACEs will be provided within the course too. This course benefits individuals who are employed to work with children in a professional capacity and those wishing to deepen their understanding of adverse childhood experiences.
