Advancing Learning in Practice University Certificate in Postgraduate Professional Development

This multi-professional accredited blended-learning module has been specifically developed to prepare you, as a health and social care professional responsible for the learning and assessing of others in your practice area.


Course overview

The module content and teaching strategies enable you to apply theory to your role as practice educator. The virtual learning environment facilitates an online community of practice through discussion boards and provides you with a range of resources to enhance your learning experience. The module will:

  • enable practitioners involved in facilitating, teaching and assessing learners within practice areas to apply theoretical principles and relevant evidence to practice education
  • facilitate you to develop and demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to fulfil the role of the practice educator
    encourage you to engage in the lifelong learning process.

How you learn

The module runs over 14 weeks with three contact days (weeks 1, 5 and 10) and up to 18 hours of distance learning using the University’s virtual learning environment.
Lectures introduce the key theories, principles and concepts underpinning practice education. Inter-professional group discussions and seminars help you apply the theories, principles and concepts to your individual practice education. You prepare for classroom activities by completing a workbook prior to the relevant contact day. Group discussion help you explore the practice contexts as places for learning and the skills and attributes required by practice-based educators. 
You are expected to reflect on your practice-based learning, facilitated through classroom-based and self-directed activities. Formative processes are through question and answer interaction, student presentations, group work discussion and debate, self and peer-evaluation including observation and constructive feedback of teaching activities carried out in the workplace, ideally by an experienced educator, which could be from your own profession or from another profession to provide feedback as an aid to learning. You use the virtual learning environment (e-learning@tees) for staff and student-generated materials. And you have the opportunity to create an online community of practice through discussion boards by staff and students.   

How you are assessed

Assessment and feedback include a 2,500-word reflective critical commentary on your development as a practice educator. This assignment is 100% weighted and the pass mark is 50%. This is submitted in week 14. This assignment is at Level 7 and feedback is provided within four weeks of the submission date.


Entry requirements

Entry requirements

As an applicant you must be a qualified allied healthcare professional (paramedic, physiotherapist, radiographer, occupational therapist) registered on the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) or a nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Career opportunities

This module provides allied health professionals and nurses with the relevant underpinning theory to support mentoring within the practice setting.
