This module offers an engaging blend of theory and practical experience designed to help you thrive as a Sport and Exercise Science or Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation student.

Course overview

You’ll explore key concepts that underpin successful practice across the sector, including exercise and physical activity engagement, physical performance, sports psychology, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.

Your learning won’t stay in the classroom—through hands on sessions using the industry standard equipment and exceptional facilities at Teesside University, you’ll apply your knowledge in real, practical scenarios. These experiences are designed to build your skills, confidence, and professional readiness from day one.

By the end of the module, you’ll have a strong foundation in the essential skills, behaviours, and scientific principles needed to progress in your studies and begin shaping your future career within sport, exercise, and rehabilitation.

What you study

  • Introduction to concepts of injury risk factors and prevention approaches.
  • Introduction to on-field trauma management. Multidisciplinary injury management and extrication.
  • Introduction to exercise-based rehabilitation of the injured athlete
  • Introduction to hydro therapeutical concepts and its application to exercise and recovery.
  • Foundational principles of exercise prescription and data-based programming for exercise performance, health and injury reduction
  • Exercise adherence
  • Safe and effective exercise prescription for special populations
  • Practical application of strength training
  • Environmental consideration for training

How you are assessed

The assessment will be in the form of a 15-minute video recorded presentation. This will focus on the implementation of one of the modular elements in relation to a hypothetical client, to either enhance sport or exercise performance, increase engagement with physical activity and exercise, or injury prevention/rehabilitation measures.
