First-class facilities

Benefit from dedicated animation labs with high-spec computers running industry-standard software such as Maya, Houdini, Realflow, 3DS Max, NukeX, Mari, Adobe

Creative Cloud, and Substance Painter and Designer. You also have access to our recording, motion-capture and Wacom Cintiq studios and a fully equipped sound

stage with green-screen facilities and motion-control cameras.


Recognised areas of excellence in the School such as entertainment computing, are supported by strong research activity and several members of staff have international reputations as acknowledged experts in their fields.

A number of recent collaborative research projects have been funded by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills and the European Commission (under the Information Society Technologies programme of the 5th and 6th European Frameworks). These projects have been in the field of virtual reality and multimodal interfaces with applications to digital arts and entertainment, such as interactive television, virtual reality art and computer games.

We also support applied research and technology transfer, with involvement in a number of teaching company schemes and knowledge transfer partnerships.

Animex is one of the largest international animation and computer games
festivals in the UK and is run by School staff with support from many regional organisations and student volunteers.

The event has a major animation screening programme as well as professional workshops and other events which give you an opportunity to meet and talk to some of the key players in the animation and games world.

The MProf and DProf are available if you want to undertake research relevant to your career. A limited number of studentships and scholarships may be available. Paid research assistantships may also be available, subject to funding.

Excellent research facilities include sophisticated motion capture equipment, immersive projection systems and an eight-node PC cluster with advanced graphics hardware.

  • design and development of interactive learning systems
