Course overview

Develop the skills and knowledge to understand and work effectively with children and young people with experiences of adversity and trauma.

High levels of personal responsibility and self-direction require you to work with complex knowledge, theory and concepts appropriate to postgraduate study.

You focus on a particular aspect of trauma-informed learning and teaching that will be valuable to your professional development. You develop your capacity to operate as a reflective professional in educational settings. You consider your professional development while consolidating previous learning to inform your future career path. And you plan, manage and evaluate your own learning as an independent lifelong learner. We hope it enables you to become confident, critical, creative, adaptable, articulate and aspiring.

The course is available part-time, starting in September for two semesters. Both modules are compulsory - there are no optional modules in the course.

This taught course is delivered outside of normal working hours to accommodate the diverse cohort of working professionals and non-practitioners - you attend for two hours, one evening a week.

Core modules

Helping Traumatised Children Learn

The impact of adversity and trauma on learning and teaching from the early years to higher education is considered. School and college policies, procedures and curriculums will be examined; the impact of working with traumatised students on educational professionals will be considered and effective approaches and strategies for succeeding in these environments will be introduced and discussed.

Understanding Childhood Trauma

You consider how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact children and young people with regards to their physical and mental health, educational outcomes and life chances. Theories of typical and atypical child development will be discussed, types of trauma will be examined and related to the impact they have on children and young people's social and emotional development and behaviour. There will be a focus on relational and developmental trauma, the stress response system, toxic stress, the damage this causes and the life-long repercussions.

How you learn

Lectures provide information whereas workshops and seminars allow for a more interactive and exploratory approach. You consider individual practice, reflect in groups and apply theory to practice. You can have a tutorial for each module with a programme team member. And you engage in independent study and investigate aspects of educational practice. You can work with other students through our virtual learning environmental where you will find additional information, guidance and discussion boards for individual and group discussions.

How you are assessed

A range of assessment methods allow you to take different approaches to exploring the learning outcomes, demonstrating your knowledge, understanding and postgraduate skills in a variety of ways. These include written assignments, where we provide feedback.


Entry requirements

You need a minimum of a 2:2 at undergraduate degree level and experience of working with children and/or young people.

For non-standard entry, applicants who are able to demonstrate suitable significant experience and/or further study may be considered for the programme. You may be asked to attend an informal interview to assess your suitability for the programme.

You develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and a range of new skills which will enable you to apply what you have learnt effectively in the workplace. This expertise could lead to greater specialisation and a more senior role with the profession.

Successful completion could lead to progress onto the MA and Doctorate of Education.
