David Fox graduated from Teesside University in 1996 with a BA (Hons) Industrial Design and his eye-catching and innovative furniture designs can now be seen gracing homes, offices and hotels across the world.

Perhaps his most iconic work, the Kruze chair for Boss Design, is also a regular fixture in television studios and has supported pundits and presenters on BBC’s Match of the Day as well as newsreaders on BBC and Channel 4 News.

David returned to Teesside University to give a guest lecture to design students, as well as launch a project for second year students.

The students will be tasked with designing furniture for an open-plan office environment which can also incorporate personal and private spaces. David will return to Middlesbrough throughout the year to check on the progress of the project.

David, who has won 17 international awards for his work, told students about how he set up his Leeds-based company, David Fox Design Ltd, in 2002 which has now grown to design for clients in Belgium, Turkey, UK Italy, Czech Republic, Canada, Poland and Spain.

I’ve been looking round the studios and the technology and materials that are being used are bang up to date with some excellent work being produced by the students.

Speaking afterwards, he said: 'I’ve not been back to the University for 25 years so it’s great to be here.

'I’ve been looking round the studios and the technology and materials that are being used are bang up to date with some excellent work being produced by the students.

'I’m really looking forward to the student project getting underway. Sometimes in the industry we can get a bit complacent so it will be fantastic to see this issue through a fresh pair of eyes and get some excellent ideas to fulfil the brief.'

Mark Freary, a Programme Leader in the MIMA School of Art & Design at Teesside University, said: 'We’re delighted to welcome David back to Teesside University.

'It’s really good for students to meet and learn from successful alumni and we’re really grateful for David for sparing his time.

'The student project represents a fantastic opportunity for students to work on a live assignment and we’re hoping that the winning design can actually be made.'
