The Adobe Certified Associate UK & Ireland Championship attracts thousands of students every year but only 20 finalists compete in a design challenge for the chance to represent the UK and Ireland at the ACA World Championship.

Finalist Joyce Tan, 22, from Malaysia, qualified for the Adobe Illustrator category after completing online training and receiving her certification.

“It felt surreal and surprising as I never thought I would qualify for the ACA UK & Ireland Championship,” Joyce said of her achievement.

“I did work very hard to get the Adobe certification and getting this good news definitely proves that my hard work is being paid off.”

Joyce is training to become a fashion designer and is studying BA (Hons) Fashion with Textiles at Teesside University’s MIMA School of Art & Design.

She said: “Having this certification allows my job application to stand out more than others as the Adobe software is widely used in the designing industry.

“The certification has definitely allowed me to produce work of high quality as I apply the new skills I've learnt and I believe in the future it will allow me to produce creative and innovative work.”

Joyce also plans to take up the online training in Adobe Photoshop.

Teesside University offers Adobe and Microsoft training in partnership with Prodigy Learning to enhance digital skills and improve employability.

Upon successful completion of the training, which tests skills in the specified application, participants receive certification which demonstrates their expertise and can opt to be entered into the championship.

The training forms part of Teesside University’s award-winning Future Facing Learning initiative which seeks to digitally empower students and staff through embracing cutting edge digital technology.

As part of the initiative, the University was the first European higher education institution to become an Adobe Creative Campus in recognition of its commitment to promoting digital literacy across all courses and areas of study.

Laura Sillars, Director of MIMA School of Art & Design, said: “Qualifying as a finalist at the ACA UK & Ireland Championship Final represents a huge achievement for Joyce and is a well-deserved reward for her hard work and dedication and enthusiasm for learning.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this online training to students wishing to improve and showcase their digital skills and we wish her the best of luck for the final.”

The ACA UK & Ireland Championship Final will take place virtually on 9 September and the 20 finalists will participate in a real-world design challenge.

Their work will be judged by a panel and the winner will be announced in a live online ceremony.
