Criminology & Sociology

Teesside University has a distinguished history of sociology and criminology teaching and research.

We were the first UK university to introduce criminology as an undergraduate programme, and one of the first in Europe. We continue to innovate, giving you the opportunity to study sociology and criminology from undergraduate through to doctorate level.

We have many internationally recognised experts, specialising and publishing at the forefront of our disciplines. Your learning is informed by our research so that you can make the links between theory, policy and practice. This learning continues beyond the University - you benefit from field visits, volunteering and placement opportunities, all essential for your graduate success.

We work with you to advance your learning and knowledge, your confidence and skills, and your opportunities and employability in a welcoming academic environment.

Teaching excellence

We are an innovative, enthusiastic team offering a unique learning environment, which includes a mock police station and replica courtroom.

We have links with many local, national and international experts and professionals who share their knowledge with you. You develop an understanding of the practical and professional potential of sociological and criminological research and theory.

Our graduates pursue careers in social work, youth work, probation, working with young offenders, policing as well as in research and teaching in colleges and universities.

Many of our students stay with us studying MSc Criminology, MSc Social Research Methods or for more advanced study under our PhD programmes.
