Introduction to Counselling

Maria undertook a Summer University course and now wants to pursue further study.

I came from the US to work in Middlesbrough, and since I had some extra time on my hands I thought it would be nice to learn something new.

Why choose a Summer University course?

I came from the US to work in Middlesbrough, and since I had some extra time on my hands I thought it would be interesting to learn something new.

Why Teesside University?

It was a local university and I was keen to meet people from the area so it seemed like the best option.

Why counselling?

I chose counselling as it can be useful in most professions, plus I have an interest in psychology. I also thought some of the skills could easily transfer to my current role, making me a better listener.

Best thing about your course?

It has to be the great lecturers and really friendly classmates – I particularly enjoyed the group discussions.

What did you think of the university campus?

I found the campus really nice and modern, and the facilities were very impressive.

Has this course helped you in your job?

Without doubt – it’s given me more empathy for my colleagues, clients and vendors. It’s also encouraged me to pursue further study.

Would you recommend Teesside University?

Yes, definitely. There’s some really interesting courses, it’s very accessible and friendly, the lecturers are warm and knowledgeable and the study environment is friendly and encouraging.
