International accolade boosts Teesside University’s global reputation

17 October 2018

Teesside University has been recognised among the world’s top universities for Social Sciences in an influential new subject-specific league table released today (Wednesday 17 October).

The University is featured in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings subject table for Social Sciences, which lists over 650 of the world’s top performing higher education institutions in this area.

The subject rankings are published on four different dates and follow the overall World University Rankings in September which saw Teesside University included for the third consecutive year.

Subjects are scored across a broad range of criteria, including teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer.

Professor Paul Croney, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive at Teesside University, said: 'We are delighted to be listed among the world’s top universities for Social Sciences.

'To be featured in such a competitive subject ranking is an achievement that our students and staff can be extremely proud of. Our vision is to be an international university with a reputation for academic excellence and this latest recognition helps to build our positive reputation across the world.'

Professor Mark Simpson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) at Teesside University, added: 'We are embedding a wide range of initiatives across our entire portfolio to ensure that students at Teesside University receive the best possible experience.

'Future Facing Learning is equipping both students and staff with the latest technology to stimulate new ideas and take teaching and learning to a new level.

Our vision is to be an international university with a reputation for academic excellence and this latest recognition helps to build our positive reputation across the world.

Professor Paul Croney.

'I am delighted to see Social Sciences ranked among the best in the world and am sure a number of our subject areas will follow as we continue our upward trajectory.'

Teesside University’s School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Law provides excellence in teaching and research in a diverse range of subject areas, including criminology, sociology, education, psychology, social work and history. It is placed in the 501-600 band in THE Social Sciences Subject Rankings.

The University’s inclusion in THE Social Sciences Subject Rankings follows the University’s success in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019.

The national guide, released last month, put Teesside University in the top 30 universities for student satisfaction with teaching and the top 40 for graduate prospects.

The Guide placed Teesside at 85th, meaning the University has risen 16 places in the last two years and continues its upward trajectory across all national league tables.

Earlier this year Teesside also climbed 11 places in the 2019 Guardian University League Table and was ranked 68th out of 121 institutions.

Professor Croney added: 'Teesside University is striving for excellence in all areas and we are committed to providing the very best student and learning experience.'
