Building on the trailblazing work of the University’s School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Law, the Institute for Social Innovation is central to Teesside University’s mission of transforming lives and economies.

Influencing public and social policy and working with communities and stakeholders to deliver real change, the Institute will provide a hub for social value and impact with regional, national and global reach.

The cross-institutional, multidisciplinary initiative will unify the University’s academic offer in enterprise and knowledge exchange, research and innovation and teaching to ensure social value is embedded into everything it does.

Led by Professor Paul Crawshaw, erstwhile Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Law, the Institute will be an international centre of excellence for academic engagement across public and social policy, economic regeneration and regional development.

Professor Crawshaw said: “With its interdisciplinary approach, the Institute for Social Innovation will work across Teesside University’s Schools to ensure the impact of our challenge-led research; research that addresses the most pressing issues facing our communities, including pathways to Net Zero, reducing inequalities and just transitions to a green economy.

“From our base in the Tees Valley, the Institute is uniquely placed to influence public and social policy, collaborating with our civic partners to improve the lives of the communities we serve with solutions-focused research that is global in reach.”
