World cup secrets at Teesside Uni

27 April 2010

With a glittering world cup by his side, former England physio Alan Smith gave a behind the scenes view of preparations for this summer's world cup tournament.

A rapt audience bombarded Alan with questions from who would be the chosen England squad to who was his favourite football manager.

Alan recalled the day he was treating Peter Shilton and Bobby Robson asked him if he wanted a cup of tea. 'I said that would be nice expecting him to ring down to the hotel reception. Instead he went to his room and made me one himself. He was a fantastic people manager.'

The special talk was part of the University’s 80th anniversary honorary and professorial public lecture series.

Alan, a Teesside University Honorary Graduate, talked about the many famous personalities and characters he has worked with during his England career describing how polite, professional and down to earth players like David Beckham are. 'If he had an appointment with me at 9.00am he would be there at ten to nine.'

Our next 80th anniversary honorary lecture is on our quest for the perfect home with Professor Tony Chapman. More about the event and how to book
