Why Teesside University?

I decided to go to university to expand my options in terms of future jobs and careers.

I’m local to Teesside so I was aware of the University’s excellent reputation. I went to an open day where I met some of the academic staff and I sat in on a lecture about studying history at Teesside – it just felt like a good fit and the small and friendly atmosphere appealed to me.

Why history?

The course suited my interests – I’ve always enjoyed history and have a natural affinity with the subject. It was really important to me to be part of a supportive setting and having met several of the history lecturers at the open day I was reassured that the history department was a nurturing environment with excellent facilities.

Best thing about your course?

In my second year I chose the Careers for Historians module which involved a ten-week placement at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA). My research featured in its summer exhibition on Teesside in the 1980s.

Tell us about the campus

The recent renovations and improvements to the facilities in the library are great.

I also really enjoy playing sport so it was good that the University has invested in a new gym with state-of-the-art equipment while I’m here.

What do you get up to in your spare time?

Middlesbrough offers a lively social scene with clubs, pubs, restaurants, and shops so there’s always something to do.

As a member of Teesside University Boat Club (TUBC) I have represented the University at the British Universities & Colleges Sport Regatta 2017 and 2018. Through TUBC I have also become involved with Tees Rowing and train regularly as part of one of its competition squads, as well as competing in local regattas and head races.

I have also been involved in the University’s Volun-Tees programme and achieved the Platinum-Plus Award for over 300 hours of volunteering.

Would you recommend Teesside University?

I would have no hesitation in recommending studying history at Teesside. I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years here, so much so that I have accepted a place to study a postgraduate degree.
