Why Teesside?

I found out about Teesside University when I saw a TV advert – it inspired me to order a prospectus and visit an open day. I studied my undergraduate degree here and stayed on to study my master’s.

Choosing to study computing wasn’t a hard decision. I have always been fascinated with technology and the continuing developments in computing. I chose Teesside over my other choices primarily because I felt very welcomed here and all staff were extremely friendly and positive about my arrival.

What are your highlights of your time at Teesside?

Living in halls in my first year was a huge highlight. It is amazing living with so many people and just always having someone there to talk (or listen) to. It was one of the best decisions I made because it helped me learn about finances and budgeting, and having all the bills included in the rent was a massive bonus.

After I finished my BSc, I was elected to a full-time position as Vice-President Education of Teesside University Students’ Union, so this was another huge highlight. I had executive responsibility for the organisation – I represented thousands of students locally and nationally, focusing on educational and academic issues. This experience prepared me for the future in so many ways.

What was your social life like?

The social side of university is incredible. Middlesbrough was the perfect place for me to come to university. I met so many interesting people and made lifelong friends. If I hadn’t moved here, I wouldn’t have got into DJing which is a big pastime of mine now. I just love playing music and helping people to have a good night out.

What are you doing now?

I am now Policy and Youth Engagement Manager at UK Youth, the leading national youth charity committed to providing access to appropriate high quality services within their communities. We aim to empower young people to build bright futures, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Outside of work, I have also recently been elected as Director of Diplomatic Affairs in the Africa and Europe Regional Committee of the Commonwealth Youth Council. In the future, I would like to set up my own social enterprise or charity, using my skills gained from university. I’d work with political organisations in democratic engagement and gender equality training for young people; delivering talks and workshops in schools and youth groups and engaging young people within democratic processes.

Did your time at university help you achieve or get closer to your goals?

My time at Teesside University helped me to understand my purpose in life. I originally went to study computing because it was an interest of mine, but throughout my time at university I understood that my real love was with politics. Being elected as Vice-President of the Students' Union helped me to realise this dream and has elevated my career in politics to enable me to work for UK Youth in campaigning and advocacy – a job I simply would not be qualified to do without my role at the Students' Union.

Would you recommend Teesside to others?

I would recommend Teesside University to anyone looking to go on to higher education. I had an incredible time at university and will remember it for the rest of my life. Some advice for prospective students is definitely make sure you visit an open day. I didn’t know just how great the staff and facilities were at Teesside until I visited.
