What made you come to Teesside University?

I was doing a degree elsewhere that I didn’t enjoy, I decided that pursuing a degree and a career in video games design was what I actually wanted to do. Being an avid gamer I often read magazines about video games - one was EDGE magazine which highly recommended Teesside University. It was this that made me decide to apply to Teesside to study.

What did you enjoy about Teesside University and the surrounding region?

I enjoyed living in Middlesbrough and had a great time socially. I loved my course too. It was full of really interesting things to do and all of my tutors and lecturers were really good and all really helpful people. Animex International Festival of Animation and Computer Games was also a highlight for me – I looked forward to it every year. It’s full of great people and really interesting talks from some of the best games developers in the world.

Would you recommend Teesside University to others?

I absolutely would recommend Teesside University. I learned loads of great skills and software packages that are essential for my current job and for what I will do in the future. I really liked the campus, the School of Computing facilities and the course leaders and tutors. I highly recommend Teesside for Animex alone. It’s hosted at Teesside every year and is a brilliant event for aspiring games developers.

What are you doing now?

I’m an assistant content producer for CBeebies Interactive. It’s my job to produce compelling children’s content for the CBeebies website and apps. I work with developers, TV production teams, designers and freelancers, ensuring that everyone has what they need to create great games and engaging digital content for the CBeebies 0-6 audience.
I helped make the CBeebies Playtime and Storytime apps which have over four million combined downloads across various mobile platforms. My crowning achievement was a producer credit on the Swashbuckle Island Adventure game in the CBeebies Playtime app.

How did your time at Teesside University help prepare you for your career?

I have the Vis Awards and ExpoTees to thank for getting me where I am today. I would never have got my foot in the door without those events. I wouldn’t have even considered working for the BBC. Teesside University helped me develop my skills in design, project and people management. Without Teesside University I would never have considered working for the BBC and applying my skills to the job I do today.
