Paul McGee is an inspirational speaker and author of the international best-selling book, SUMO (Shut Up, Move On), as well as YESSS! The SUMO Secrets to Being a Positive, Confident Teenager.

He addressed a virtual audience of business leaders, lecturers, students and members of the public at the University’s special Business Exchange event which coincided with Darlington Business Week.

Paul offered a fresh approach on getting the most out of life with his inspirational ideas, energetic delivery and humorous anecdotes as he spoke about leadership, motivation, overcoming obstacles and the power of making a difference.

His simple but profound messages included ‘all’s well that starts well,’ ‘to be at your best, you need to rest’ and to concern yourself with things which you can control.

Speaking about his motivational work, Paul said: ‘I am extremely passionate about what I do, and I get a real thrill when what I say seems to be helping others.

‘It’s great that people can connect with the ideas in my books and sessions like these and take those practices forward to thrive in both their professional and personal lives.’

Paul has faced numerous physical and psychological challenges in his 57 years, including with his ME diagnosis.

Paul added: ‘You get setbacks in life. It’s a game of snakes and ladders and sometimes you land on a snake. But the question that needs to be asked is, “What are you going to do about it?”

It’s great that people can connect with the ideas in my books and sessions like these and take those practices forward to thrive in both their professional and personal lives.

’We need to focus on what we can do and accept that there are times when something is out of our control. The future is flexible. It’s not a place that you get to, it’s a place you can help to create, and we can do things today that can improve our tomorrow.’

The Business Exchange is a network of business leaders in the North East and North Yorkshire.

This session was delivered online, but the Business Exchange event is usually held at Teesside University’s Centre for Professional and Executive Development in Darlington.

Laura Woods, Director of Academic Enterprise at Teesside University, said: ‘We are delighted to have been able to welcome Paul to the latest event in our Business Exchange series.

‘The session was extremely thought-provoking and the practical and profound insights Paul offered, paired with his witty delivery and fantastic sense of humour, allowed everybody in the audience to connect with the important messages on getting the best out of life.’

The next event in the University’s Business Exchange series will be taking place on 21 January 2022 and will feature Helena Langdon, Head of Digital and Communities at Innocent.
