12-month industrial placement

Teesside University offers a wide range of undergraduate degree programmes, which can include a 12-month industrial placement. These courses are open to home and international students.

High quality work experience is an essential part of preparing our students for the world of work, and for businesses, hosting a student brings a range of benefits such as new innovative ideas and excellent technical skills.

By supporting the University with placements, local businesses will positively contribute to promoting the Tees Valley as a great place to study and a region that welcomes skilled learners from around the world. We have a range of talented and enthusiastic students from a range of disciplines seeking work experience.

What is a work placement?

A 12-month industrial placement takes place between the second and final year of study on an undergraduate course. It can also take place in the third year of a four-year Master's degree.

When can a student start the placement?

A student can start a placement from the end of the second semester in May until the end of August and should run for 12 months. The placement should be completed by the end of August the following year.

Should the placement be paid?

A placement student is required to receive a wage and should receive no less than the minimum wage as per government regulations. The wage required being relative to the student's personal age. We do not advocate voluntary 12-month placements.

How do I advertise a placement?

You can register your company on our free online Student Futures Portal. Your vacancy can also be promoted through the relevant Work Experience Officer. Contact the Placements Team at placements@tees.ac.uk

What do I do if a student contacts me for a placement direct and we want to offer them one?

Contact the Placements Team at placements@tees.ac.uk and they will be able to assist you in the approval of the placement.

What is the approval process for a student sought placement?

The placement provider will be required to provide a job description/person specification. The placement will need to be approved by the Academic School. Once this has been approved, we will then proceed with due diligence on your company, including gathering and storing information around health and safety and risk assessments where required. Once all of this has been completed, we will be able to fully approve the placement.

Can the student work remotely?

Yes, as long as they have the equipment, training and software required to undertake the role at home.

What support will the student have whilst on placement?

The student is still classed as a current student at Teesside University whilst on placement and will be supported throughout by their dedicated Work Experience Officer, who will contact them on a monthly basis on a pastoral level. They will also be assigned an academic tutor who will meet with the company and the student at prearranged times to check on academic progress.

What support is there for the company?

The same support as the student from the Work Experience Officer and the academic tutor.

How many students can I take on for placements?

There is no limit to the number of students you can take on for placements.
