Why Teesside University?

I chose Teesside because of the amazing facilities. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do, I just knew I really enjoyed working with computers. I looked at several other universities but none of them compared to Teesside.

I also spoke to a few current students and they had nothing but praise for the University.

Best thing about your course?

The course was really broad and flexible, allowing me to explore multiple areas of information technology and to focus on my areas of interest. This helped me identify a passion for information security which resulted in me securing my current role at IBM when I graduated.

The lecturers were extremely helpful and willing to spend time explaining complex topics which was great. They were also available outside of core hours which was invaluable, especially nearer to deadline times.

What did you learn?

Because the course was so broad I developed skills in a range of areas including networking, web development, security, and database management. They’ve all been extremely relevant in my current role, allowing me to understand and work on fast-paced projects.

What are you doing now?

I’m a security consultant for IBM within the financial and banking industry. I focus on security intelligence – detecting and responding to security incidents. I meet regularly with clients to ensure they’re able to detect and react to potential threats, allowing us to mitigate further damage. It’s a really interesting area to work in.

What advice would you give to someone considering Teesside University?

Make sure you check out the facilities – they’re excellent – and talk to lecturers/current students to get your questions answered. Teesside is an excellent University with a great student focus. The new campus developments makes the whole experience even better, creating a real buzz around the University.
