Why MIMA School of Art and Design?

Teesside is my hometown so I’ve heard lots of positive things about the School. The reputation and the facilities swayed my decision to study here.

Best thing about the course?

The design modules are fun and exciting and you have lots of flexibility so you can really use your creativity. The work can be challenging but this makes the end product even more rewarding, especially when you have a lot of creative input on a project. The sessions are engaging and inspiring, and the tutors make sure you are always trying to think of new and innovative ideas.

Best thing about studying at MIMA School of Art & Design?

There’s a huge range of specialist equipment for you to use for your studies and personal projects. I use the screen printing and heat press facilities in the print textile room for my own clothing brand.

How are the tutors?

The module leaders have all worked in industry so they bring a wealth of personal experience and knowledge to their teaching. They’re really supportive and care a lot about making sure you create the best work possible. They push you out of your comfort zone so you grow further.

Most important thing you’ve learnt?

Having faith and confidence in yourself and your work is something I have developed a lot at Teesside. I had no experience in fashion education before this course and I often doubted myself, but I learnt that the most important skill is confidence and the willingness to make mistakes.

Favourite memory?

I designed and created an upcycled denim jacket and pair of jeans which is something I was really proud of. Before starting this course I’d never used a sewing machine before, however with help from the module leaders combined with my willingness to learn I managed to create an entire outfit from scratch.

Tell us about the facilities

The studios and facilities are amazing. You have access to a range of equipment including industrial sewing machines, sublimation printers and industry-standard software.

What are you classmates like?

We have a very close relationship. We talk about work-related subjects and projects, and often spend time outside of studying together.

Favourite thing about Middlesbrough?

I have quick and easy access to so many areas across the North of England. We are lucky to have a lot in our area and we are only a short drive away from a handful of main cities which have countless job opportunities.

Future plans?

I want to get experience of working in the fashion industry so I can improve my clothing brand and eventually have my own successful label.
