Why Teesside?

I wanted a challenge and to better myself. I initially applied after college, however due to a bad experience with teaching at that time I withdrew my application due to begin, out of fear and anxiety. After working for a few years, I decided that I was not going to let this fear stop me forever.

I chose Teesside as it is close to home and I wanted to continue working while studying.

Why did you choose HRM?

I like challenges and to solve problems or offer support and, reflecting on my employment, I have always appeared to be the problem solver so this course felt right for me. In business I am more drawn to the people aspect of an organisation.

Best thing about your course?

The interaction with other students (even if it can be difficult sometimes) as it gives you an insight into another person’s perspective and combining it with your own can bring the best possible solution for an issue.

I enjoyed modules that focus on the development of an individual and how things can help or hinder progression. The business psychology module when paired with the personal and professional development for business considered why some past situations have gone a certain way, and explored what could have been changed to avoid it.

What do you think about the campus and the services?

I am a quiet person and the library’s multiple floors for different purposes was a life saver as you can book a study space. The Students’ Union has many services within the one building, including social aspects and careers advice/opportunities.

What about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

I don't live in the Middlesbrough area, however, having the shopping centres on the doorstep of uni is great. The amount of night life caters to pretty much everyone and the transport from the centre is ideal to travel a bit further away for a change of scenery.

What’s your Teesside experience been like so far?

So far I’ve gained a great insight into the business world, but my own self development is a big plus, specifically my communication skills. I am hoping to work my way up to a management position as the skills, knowledge and experiences I’ve gained have given me an insight and understanding of how a company works which can help with problem solving.

Any advice to students thinking of coming to Teesside?

It's okay if you don't understand things straight away, there will be a lot of people in the same situation. Talk to your peers because you will build your understanding of the modules and develop friendships, just as I have done.

I would recommend Teesside because even through this challenge of Covid and distance learning, the staff have done their very best to provide support and guidance, while also learning how to handle the situation.
