Chinese media delegation visits Teesside University

28 February 2018

Teesside University has hosted a Chinese media delegation, including a dozen representatives from Chinese print and digital press, the British Council and a film crew.

The visit was part of a media tour designed to promote the inspiring study and work experience of Chinese alumni from UK institutions.

Teesside University was one of a small, select number of UK institutions visited, and the delegation was accompanied by award-winning Teesside graduate, Coco Zhao. Coco, who graduated from BA (Hons) TV and Film Production in 2015, introduced the delegation to her former lecturers and spoke to the media representatives about her time at Teesside University and how it impacted on her skills and career potential.

The delegation received a full tour of Teesside’s state-of-the-art media studios, library and MIMA, and had the chance to meet current Chinese media students, from Beijing Film Academy, NCWU and Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce.

Coco, who has won both a prestigious Royal Television Society Award and the ‘Spirit of Youth’ Award as part of the British Council’s 2017-18 Alumni Awards in China since graduating, was one of only two UK alumni selected to meet Prime Minister Theresa May the week before on her visit to Wuhan, China.

Vicky Sun, Education Communications Manager at the British Council based in Beijing commented:

The Chinese journalists were particularly interested to hear about the placement and work experience opportunities offered to Teesside students and how this impacts on their employability.”

“All members of the media delegation were so impressed by the facilities offered and the calibre of staff at Teesside University. The Chinese journalists were particularly interested to hear about the placement and work experience opportunities offered to Teesside students and how this impacts on their employability.”

Lucy Jolly, Senior Lecturer in Teesside University, added “we were delighted to welcome the Chinese media delegation. Coco Zhao was a fantastic student who really made the most of all the opportunities at Teesside University, and her RTS and Spirit of Youth awards are well deserved. It’s great that so many international students join our Film & TV Production course: we work with them to develop their creativity and narrative techniques both within their modules and also with placements and work experience with production companies and broadcasters. At present we have a high number of third year international students in all three year groups and the work they are doing is of a very high standard.”
