Teesside youth research debated 'Down Under'

01 April 2007

Professor Robert MacDonald has spoken at two international events in Australia. The 'Pathways Into and Out of Crime' symposium drew together social scientists and policy makers from the US, Australia, New Zealand and UK to better understand how offending develops in childhood and youth and the best ways of preventing it.

Prof. MacDonald drew upon the research he has conducted with colleagues in Teesside on young people and social exclusion. In the second presentation to the Queensland government he reviewed the development of youth policy in the UK since 1997.

As well as helping establish an international profile for Teesside youth research, these events generated useful contacts among British and Australian policy makers and across social scientists working in different disciplinary fields such as developmental psychology, social anthropology and criminology.
