Year 10 environmental research

24 February 2011

26 Year 10 pupils from Risedale Sports and Community College visited the University recently to take part in an activity delivered by CLEMANCE.

CLEMANCE is the University’s environmental research centre and challenges the idea that environmental protection is a financial burden on industry by providing clean technology solutions to environmental problems

During the day, pupils worked on constructing a PicoTurbine and were also challenged to use solar power to generate hydrogen to power a car. For the car challenge, each group of pupils had to power their car enough to do a maximum number of laps of a circuit, which proved to be very competitive. The day culminated with a discussion on how we will be fuelling our energy needs in 2020.

The pupils and staff had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make electricity, working together as a team and working with science to build useful things.
