02 September 2015

Civil Engineering student Zaffar Sultan is celebrating winning a regional award.

Final year MEng Civil Engineering student Zaffar won first prize in this year’s Outstanding Student Project in Concrete Materials Research competition jointly run by the Northern Regions Committees for the Concrete Society and the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Zaffar, under the supervision of Valeria Bona, carried out paired comparison tests between steel and macrosynthetic fibres when used in concrete components.

The competition was introduced during the summer of 2014 to recognise and reward the research conducted by students from the Northern regions of England who are enrolled on undergraduate and master’s level programmes in civil and structural engineering. This year’s entries were received from students at Teesside, Northumbria and Durham universities.

Peter Bell, chairman of the Concrete Society’s Northern Region’s committee presented the award to Zaffar at a ceremony in Newcastle.

The Outstanding Concrete Projects Awards are sponsored jointly by the Northern committees of the Concrete Society, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Sherburn Stone Company Ltd.
