Product design students earn national recognition

23 September 2015

Accolades were won by two Teesside University design students at national industry awards.

Second year Product Design students Calum Brookbanks and Lewis White won silver and bronze awards respectively at the Student Starpack Awards 2015, held at the National Space Centre in Leicester.

The aim of the awards is to recognise the work of young designers who can create packaging which is not only graphically attractive, but also meets functional requirements to preserve and protect the contents and can be produced cost-effectively with regard to environmental issues.

Calum, 20, Eaglescliffe, said: ‘I am really pleased to win the Student Starpack Silver award, it's great to know that my hard work within the course is being recognised. The presentation ceremony was a good opportunity to network with students and experts within the field. I would like to thank all of my course tutors at Teesside University for their expert tuition and support.'

Lewis, 20, Stockton, said: ‘It was great to be invited to the awards show, as it allowed both Calum and myself to talk to people in the industry and gain a better understanding of work in the field outside of university.

'It's always nice to win an award and great to get the recognition for the hard work and dedication put into the course.'

Calum and Lewis also met up with Teesside University graduate Richard Turnock, who graduated in 2000 and now works as a senior construction designer for Multi Packaging Solutions, based in Bradford.

Richard was in the same position as Calum and Lewis in 1999, when he won Gold at the Starpack Awards.

The Starpack Awards are organised by IOM Communications Ltd and endorsed by The Packaging Society, a division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).
