Widely published in his field, his research interests include how complex microbial communities are implicated in a number of diseases including cystic fibrosis and necrotising enterocolitis a serious illness seen in premature babies. He has also worked extensively on antibiotic resistance and exploiting nitrogen-fixing bacteria to improve soil fertility in agricultural systems.

Professor Cummings oversees an academic school which offers a diverse portfolio of courses, including various engineering disciplines, forensics, disaster management, food and nutrition, chemistry and biology.

He said: 'It is an exciting time for the School of Science & Engineering, with £6m recently invested in our science and engineering facilities.

'The School not only has a role in providing graduates equipped with the skilled required by employers in industries from manufacturing to engineering, but also in playing a part the development of technologies and the future generation of scientists, engineers, problem solvers, innovators and leaders.'

Recent investment in the School of Science & Engineering has seen a three-storey glass extension to the Orion building and major refurbishment of the laboratories. The latest industry standard equipment has also been installed including a flight simulation laboratory, jet engine testing room and process control facility.

Professor Cummings was previously Associate Dean (Academic) and Professor of Microbiology in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Northumbria University.
