Expert provides insight into the resurgence of far right movements

A Teesside University Professor was invited to share his expertise on the far right at a prestigious international conference.

Professor Matthew Feldman, who co-leads the University’s Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist Studies, spoke at the eleventh debate on Democratic Security, co-organised by the Council of Europe and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration.

The event in April was held at the Council of Europe headquarters in Strasbourg.

His talk 'Alt-right, far-right, near right: mainstreaming extremes,' explored the resurgence of the far-right movements, including through some of its recent ‘alt–right’ manifestations. Professor Feldman spoke about the danger of right-wing populism, authoritarian democracy and the growing influence of far-right political ideas on mainstream politics.

The Debates on Democratic Security series aims to examine current thinking and dynamics behind the concept of democratic security, identify main elements and threats and explore how democratic security can strengthen, through different mechanisms related to democracy, human rights and rule of law, peace and stability in Europe.

Debates feature eminent personalities from politics, civil society and the academic world who present their vision of democratic security and its components. In each debate, speakers address in a different way, the complexity of issues related to democratic security and aim to encourage frank and thought-provoking discussion between participants.
